Children's Privacy Policy

1. Who this Policy is for
This Policy applies to child profiles for users under the age of 13 within a Family plan on Rooted with the Vine. It supplements our general Privacy Policy and is designed to comply with the U.S. Children's Online Privacy Protection Act ("COPPA") and similar laws.
Children under 13 cannot create their own Rooted with the Vine account. Their access is mediated through a parent's or guardian's Family plan.
2. Parental consent
When you create a Family plan and add a child profile, you are providing verifiable parental consent for us to collect and use that child's information as described in this Policy. We treat the act of a paying adult Family-plan holder adding a child profile within their own household as sufficient verifiable parental consent under COPPA, because:
- The Family plan is a paid product, so we have already verified the adult through a payment method.
- The child profile lives under the parent's account; the parent controls it.
- The information collected is limited (first name + optional age range) and used only for in-product personalization.
You may withdraw consent at any time by deleting the child profile from your Family plan or by emailing us (see Contact).
3. What we collect for child profiles
For each child profile, we collect only:
- First name (or a nickname) to personalize the profile.
- Age range (optional) to tailor reading-level and visual question types.
- Activity within the Service: sessions opened, XP earned, streak data, questions answered. This data is tied to the child profile, not to a personal identifier outside the profile.
We do not collect an email address, phone number, photo, voice, or any persistent identifier for child profiles. Authentication to the Family plan is always through the parent's email.
4. What we don't collect
For child profiles we specifically do not collect:
- Geolocation data.
- Photos, video, or audio.
- Contact lists or friends' email addresses.
- Behavioral advertising identifiers.
- Cross-site tracking data.
- Any persistent identifier that could be used to recognize the child outside the Service.
5. How we use it
Child profile data is used only to:
- Operate the profile inside the parent's Family plan (greet the child by name, track their progress, award XP).
- Roll the child's contribution into family-shared gameplay (Family League, Family streak).
- Maintain in-product safety and security.
We do not use child data for marketing, profiling, behavioral advertising, or to train AI models.
6. Who we share it with
Child profile data is shared only with the same operational service providers used for the parent account (Supabase for storage, Cloudflare for hosting). These providers are contractually bound to use the data only for the purpose we've engaged them and to protect it.
We do not share child data with advertisers, brokers, analytics services that build profiles, or any third party for marketing.
7. Parents' rights
As the parent or guardian of a child profile under your Family plan you may at any time:
- Review the information associated with the child profile. It is visible to you when signed in to your Family plan, or available via email request.
- Delete the child profile and all associated data, directly from your Family plan settings or by emailing us. Deletion is irreversible and completed within 30 days.
- Refuse further collection by deleting the profile.
- Receive a copy of the child's data in a portable format (CSV or JSON) by emailing us.
